Grammy Countdown!

Grammy-Awards-Logo-300x300

The Grammys are right around the corner folks.  This Sunday, February 10th , live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.  Did you know that the original category count for nominees in the 50’s was only 22?  Now it’s 78.

This year’s event has a huge line-up of performers and presenters, including  the lady-of-the-moment, Beyoncé who’s racked up 16 total Grammy’s over the years. She’s almost beat Allison Krauss’ female record of 20 wins.  Stevie Wonder actually holds the record for a solo artist with the most Grammy awards coming in with 22.

One of the most anticipated performances this year is from IMAGEM’s own Justin Timberlake, making this the first time since 2006 he has performed in support for a new single.  Other performances scheduled are from Frank Ocean, Mumford and Sons, The Black Keys, Jack White, fun., and a special piece by Alicia Keys and Maroon 5.  Alicia Key’s hubby and another IMAGEM artist Swizz Beatz will hopefully be in the front row cheering her on!

Carole King, one of the best songwriters of all time, will be receiving the much deserved Lifetime Achievement award.  She has inspired and enriched all of us with her timeless songs for decades.  Thank you Carole!

In other Grammy news, any die-hard One Direction fans, bring out the tissues because they were completely snubbed this year for Best New Artist even after releasing TWO top albums and selling out numerous arenas. It’s not that bad, Snoop Lion is the 3rd most nominated artist of all time that hasn’t won a single Grammy yet!  The most ridiculous examples of artists who are Grammy-less are  Rod Stewart, Queen, The Jackson Five, Bob Marley, Buddy Holly and The Beach Boys.

We here at 5 alarm Music want to extend a BIG congratulations and best of luck to all the artists nominated!

U-S-A! U-S-A!

It’s time to bust out those Sousa Marches, the 4th of July is here! If Mr.Sousa magically rose from the dead, the first thing I would say to him would be this: “High School marching band almost ruined your music for me, but you’re still awesome!” Somehow being in the audience of a 4th of July parade is far better than wearing a thick wool band uniform while wielding heavy band instruments through the scorching July heat…..

But I digress! Here are some Americana ditties to get you in the mood for sparking up the good ol’ BBQ and lighting those rocket sized fireworks you bought at that roadside tent in Tennessee. Make sure the wick isn’t shorter than your legs can carry you!

Drummers Doing It Differently – Meet Sarah Scarlata

“What do you call a drummer without a girlfriend? Homeless!”

Sarah is not that girlfriend, nor is she a typical drummer (and I say that with all due respect to my favorite drummers Dennis Chambers, Neil Peart, and Gavin Harrison.

Meet 5 Alarm Music’s own Sarah Scarlata!  Blog Goddess, Metadata Guru and Music Search whiz.  Hailing from Massachussetts she has a solid foundation of drum technique and performance, coupled with music theory and application from her studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston.  She continues to pave the way for female drummers, having taught at Atascadero High  School  (where the Drum Corps class she taught took 1st place their division).  Her passion is collecting vintage drum kits and percussion instruments (ask her about her “Yes Plate” sometime).

Sarah is an anomaly.  She works full time listening to, researching and describing music for Editors, Producers and Music Supervisors who need to find music on http://search.5alarmmusic.com/main and also performs regularly with various artist in and around Los Angeles, in addition to her band “The Lookout Kids” who she formed with longtime collaborater and singer as former “Rain Fur Rent” band members.  Travis Warren is currently with the iconic band Blind Melon.  Being able to juggle both right and left brain activities flawlessly, she is definitely not homeless!

If you didn’t happen to catch Sarah headlining The Viper Room with “The Lookout Kids” on Wednesday,  July 13, 2011, you can listen to her composing and playing on the 5 Alarm Music label.

What Do Music Supervisors Wish You Knew?

That’s a great question.  Whether you are a composer or work “in the industry,” getting music in TV and Film productions is as sought after as the beach on a sweltering Summer day.  It stands to reason that understanding what music supervisors are looking for is the key to the kingdom.

Our very own Cassie Lord will be speaking along with other distinguished industry gurus this Monday, June 20th at the “What Music Supervisors Wish You Knew” panel hosted by the Production Music Association (PMA).  This SESAC sponsored event will made you wise and savvy, guaranteed.  You can thank me later!

Here’s the lowdown:

What: What Music Supervisors Wish You Knew

When: Monday, June 20th from 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM

Where: Sportsmen’s Lodge Hotel – 12833 Ventura Blvd, Studio City, CA 91604

Cover: PMA Members – $10, Non-Members and Guests – $15

(East Bound & Down, Why Not? with Shania Twain, co-owner of Brand X Music and PostHaste Music), Cassie Lord (Vice President/General Manager of 5 Alarm Music) and Randy Wachtler (Founder and Composer of 615 Music).

Be there or be square, Daddio!

Doug Bossi: Multiple Award Winner At 2011 BMI Awards

Hats off to our 5 Alarm compadre Doug Bossi for winning not one, but two BMI Awards!

His compositions featured in ABC’s philanthropic show Secret Millionaire and The Discovery Channel’s aviator family documentary series Flying Wild Alaska received BMI’s highest honor last week.  Doug was one of only 14 other artists that got more than one BMI TV and Film Awards this year.

Doug has contributed lots of music to the 5 Alarm Music Library as well as being the main creative force behind the 1 Versatile Underscore music library.  His musical diversity spans many genres and moods.  Anything from hard hitting guitar riffs with vocals (05A065 Classic Rock) to atmospheric guitar reflections (05A089 Ambient Guitar Scores) to edge-of-your seat filmic rock (05A086 Superhero Rock) to feel good lifestyle grooves (1VU001 Neutral) to pensive reflective moods (1VU005 Emotive), Doug proves that he can do it all!

Congratulations Doug, 5 Alarm Music is your number one fan!

My Favorite 5: Mary Lorraine Stewart

You can always count on Mary Lorraine Stewart, fondly known as ML around these parts, for the following:

1)  A vast knowledge of Pop Culture past and present

2)  A fond penchant for throwing and attending themed parties

3)  Laugh out loud one liners

4)  An ability to rise to the occasion at any costume party by pulling off a likeness to Bjork or a Blonde Ambition era Madonna (yes, that did happen).

Her Favorite 5 illustrates her full circle vision of music’s ability to enhance a production.  Without further ado, let’s hear first hand what ML ♥’s about 5 Alarm Music:

All Flossed Out – 5 Alarm Music Library (05A044_01)

Terms like “library music,” “stock music,” even “production music” don’t convey how amazing our composers and artists are.  This song is a perfect example.  After this Entourage Trailer, everyone wanted to know where the song came from and how they could get a hold of it.  The track is actually not from an artist off our label, but a composer from the 5 Alarm library!  It is infectious, fun and better than most Hip Hop on the radio right now.

Planning for Tomorrow – Parry Music Library (PML1081_13)

While All Flossed Out exemplifies how our music could be on the radio, this song shows another type of music we represent. In an episode of the Office, when Sabre takes over Dunder Mifflin, the typical corporate video (ironically hosted by timeless heartthrob Christian Slater) was made to show the employees, using none other than 5 Alarm music!  If you do need corporate music, music that needs to be in the background to enhance your production, but nothing that distracts, we have thousands of tracks to choose from.

Blaire Woods – Jingle Jangle Christmas (Rescue Records)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Not only is Blaire one of my best friends, but she is also the most talented musician I know.  Christmas is my all time favorite time of year, and this song belongs on every record player at every Christmas party on the screen.  Puts you in the Christmas spirit, is original, and is catchy as all get out.

Hooshere – Stolen Glances (Rescue Records)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Another one of my friends, Hooshere Bezdikian, is a fantastic musician with Rescue Records.  She sings Armenian music and is just one of many of our world music artists.  I love that no matter how particular your music search is for your project, (even Paraguayan Folk Tales!) we’ve got it.

Carol of the Bells – Custom Music for Saks Fifth Avenue’s Annual Christmas Snowflake Light Show

Even though I love all of our libraries, I am very proud that 5 Alarm can produce and record a tailored one of a kind track for a client at a moments notice if need be.  Since we have already established that Christmas is my favorite time of year, I of course have to brag about 5 Alarm’s custom composition created for one of the coolest Christmas displays in New York City.  Across from Rockefeller Center, at the original Sak’s Fifth Avenue, there is a wondrous Snowflake light show set to a powerful yet delicate Carol of the Bells.  Thousands of tourists descend every season to stop, stare, and listen to this magical syncopated sight and sound that happens every 15 minutes!

KCRW’s Summer Concert Series Gives Pasadena A Dose Of Cool

KCRW + Free Show + Great Bands + Old Town Pasadena = AWESOME!

Last Saturday kicked off KCRW’s Summer Nights concert series in our beloved Old Town Pasadena with a scorching performance from Hot Hot Heat (who didn’t sing along to the gargled vocals of their hit Bandages back in 03′?).  This Saturday’s performance will feature LA’s very own Everest starting at 7:30 with KCRW DJ/music supervisor Chris Douridas closing out the night.  It all happens at One Colorado which is an open seating area located off Colorado Boulevard between Fair Oaks and DeLacey Boulevard.

After your sun block starts to wear off and the BBQ is left to die out, spark off your Saturday evenings with some infectious Summer melodies!

My Favorite 5: Maddie Madsen

Way back in 2002, 5 Alarm Music was just a wee lad born from the minds of Cassie Lord and Maddie Madsen.  Maddie is a rare breed – a shredding musician/songwriter who is responsible enough to hold a job……and even start a company!!  That’s about as common as a living breathing Dodo bird.

Maddie’s taste in music is diverse to say the least.  She loves everything from Metal to Mahler!  So without further ado, here’s Maddie’s Favorite 5:

Weeping World – 5 Alarm Music Library (05A031 track 7)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I’m the Co-Executive Producer for the 5 Alarm Music library. This song will always have a special meaning to me because of it’s ability to transport me back to the beginning, when there were only 4 of us and also the relevance of it’s message as a song.

Wonderawe – Cinemasounds Music Library (CTM002 track 10)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Linda Martinez was one of the most brilliant musicians I have ever had the honor of working with. I remember sitting in the studio watching the live players performing her score for this composition after she had passed away and getting chills. The world is not the same without her.

Huggy Bear – Primrose Music Library (PRCD150 track 1)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I went through a big Electronica phase about 10 years ago and Big Beat is so much fun! This song cracks me up.

Shelter Over You – Green Vinyl Dream (Rescue Records)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Anyone who really knows me knows I’m a rocker at heart. I’ve played in 2 Progressive Metal bands in my former life. I love this band and the lyrics really speak to me.

Mahler’s 5th Symphony: Adagietto – Supraphon Music Library (SUP11-1976 track 4)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I grew up playing and listening to Classical music and this is one of my all time favorites. I even saw Mahler’s Fifth Symphony performed in London by the LSO. What a treat!

My Favorite 5: TerriLynn Rosa

We here at 5 Alarm Music love our music.  We were the ones donning band tee shirts in high school and have the record/tape/CD collection that could fill an entire garage.  My Favorite 5 is a brand new weekly blog that outlines some of our favorite songs in the 5 Alarm Music catalog and why we dig it in our own words.  Let’s meet TerriLynn Rosa, shall we?

TerriLynn Rosa, also lovingly known as “TL” around here, is the brain behind Rescue Records.  She signs Independent artists and works hard to get their music placed in TV shows and movies.  When she’s not giving indie artists their well deserved break in the music industry, she has the ability to make a darn good cupcake for your birthday!  She also could not commit to choosing only 5 favorites.  Here’s TL’s Favorite 5……..or 9:

The Traveling Hat

Finding 5 Alarm Music at the annual NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) Convention closely resembles a Where’s Waldo book.  Yep, we’re the ones wearing the flaming cowboy hats.  Can’t miss us!

In 2007, Jeffrey Stansfield visited our booth and took a liking to our annual NAB signature apparel.  A gifted hat and 3 years later we receive an email with an update.  In that time Jeffrey has taken that hat to Paris, Amsterdam, Israel, Russia, Canada, Mexico, Greece and Italy…..

Volunteered for the Red Cross…..

Gone snowboarding…..

Catered many events…..

He has jumped out of planes and climbed mountains at Yosemite donning his 5 Alarm flaming stetson.  The adventures of Jeffrey and his hat are as global and diverse as our music libraries.

Cheers to many new adventures to you and your beloved hat, Jeffrey!
