5 Alarm Composer Lamont Dozier Has A Busy Month Ahead!

As a member of the colossal songwriting trifecta Holland-Dozier-Holland, Lamont Dozier penned 12 international number one hits for artists such as The Supremes, The Four Tops, and Marvin Gaye. His solo career has spanned 30 years, with Dozier garnering multiple Grammys, a Golden Globe, and an Oscar Nomination. He is a member of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. 5 Alarm Music is so fortunate to count the legendary Lamont Dozier as not only one of our composers, but a friend.

Lucky attendees at BMI’s SongHall in New York City will get to learn from Mr. Dozier in person on June 16th. During a Master Class series, the songwriting icon will discuss his creative process and answer questions. Two days later, he will receive the BMI SongHall’s 2009 Johnny Mercer Award. Previously given to music masters such as Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon, the award recognizes current Songwriter Hall of Fame members who have contributed songwriting excellence comparable to that of the late Johnny Mercer.

Fickman’s “Race to Witch Mountain” On Fire!

Spring has been pretty exciting for 5 Alarm and our clients!  Two of our songs were featured in the blockbuster Race to Witch Mountain making its box office debut March 13th.  It was the first Disney film of 2009 to open at #1!  We got a chance to sit down with the director of Witch Mountain Andy Fickman and pick his brain……

How old were you when you decided to become a director?

Well I knew I wanted to be involved in the entertainment industry when I was about 6 years old and doing community theater in Texas.  Some of my best work was when I was 6.  I sorta peaked there, but my actual designs on directing really started in Robert E. Lee High School in Houston, Texas – I had a remarkable drama teacher, Linda Shuler who really encouraged me to direct.  I actually got to direct a lot of things in the theater department which was an amazing experience.

What made you decide to start your own production music library?

I wanted to be in control of my own music. When you write for TV for 18 years (as I have) you realize that all of the music you have written has been for a specific purpose or show and that the rights are owned by Sony or Nickelodeon or HBO etc… With a music library I can do any kind of music that I feel there will be a market for and I own the music. Those two aspects are very appealing to me. Also I knew the group that put together 5 Alarm Music from previous experiences and I had a lot of confidence that they would do a good job promoting my music and getting it out to the networks and other clients.
