Blooming In The Desert: NAB 2015

Spring is a season of rebirth and vibrant colors blooming in panoramic Technicolor. The cold and stormy weather gives way to a brighter and lighter feeling in the air. It’s only fitting that the biggest music library gathering of the year, The NAB Show (National Association of Broadcasters), happens every April when Spring is in full swing!

IMG_1412

This year’s gala was one for the record books! We were graced with a strong turnout to our party at the Picasso terrace at the Bellagio Hotel which supplied an elegant environment to the festivities. How about that fountain show?

IMG_9823

We also kept Vegas classy by hosting limo rides through the Las Vegas strip for all of our guests, sub-publishers, clients and friends. You may have struck out at the casino, but you’re always a winner when riding in a limo!

IMG_9835

Amidst all of the fun, some giant leaps forward were made in protecting the rights of music publishers. David Israelite, President and CEO of the NMPA (National Music Publishers’ Association), was the esteemed guest speaker at the annual PMA (Production Music Association) meeting and discussed protecting the rights of music publishers in the digital streaming age. With music streaming services becoming the main source of public music consumption, it is becoming more important to ensure that writers and publishers still get paid fairly for their creative efforts. Fair pay will enable writers and publishers to continue to release all of those beautiful sounds that make the World a better place to live. We’re supportive of the fight and are grateful to see progress pointing in the right direction!

Thank you to all who joined us for this year’s NAB celebration, we look forward to seeing you again soon!

Made Up Music: Nothing Beats The Real Thing!

Since the dawn of mankind, people have gathered and made music.  It binds cultures and enriches everyday life.  The music from an era can say more about the times than chapters in a history book.

There has been no place and time more influential on modern music than Great Britain in the 1960’s.  If it weren’t for the British Invasion bands from the early to mid 60s, our musical landscape would be vastly different today.  Not to mention a lot less rockin’!

MUM logo (square)

With all of that being said, meet Made Up Music!  This British catalog embodies the long musical history of its founders – Ray Russell (David Bowie, Tina Turner, John Barry), Ralph Salmins (Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Madonna) and Rik Walton (Queen, Eric Clapton, Pete Townsend).  Usually when someone says “I can play anything,” it’s a little suspect.  In this case, they really can play everything and have contributed to some of the most famous songs in rock n’ roll’s long and illustrious history.  Their dedication to preserving studio techniques while utilizing the tools of the trade that captured sounds of the most classic recordings of all-time shine through on their productions.  The proof is in the pudding with their placements in Mad Men, Trophy Wife, Revenge, Vegas, Hell on Wheels, The Lying Game, Magic City and The Secret Circle.

When you sit down and chat with the jolly chaps from Made Up Music, you hear “the real deal” stories from guys who were there.  Here’s one of my favorites: Ray Russell was on tour as Cat Steven’s guitarist in the late 60s.  Late one night, he was awoken to a man looking into his hotel window by the fire escape.  Once his eyes adjusted to the dark of the room, he notices that the tall lanky creeper waving at him was none other than Jimi Hendrix!  Turns out Jimi locked himself out of his room and was already an acquaintance of Ray’s, so they proceeded to talk the night away over a cup of tea.  That, my friends, is the definition of “being there!”

Their latest release, MUM178 The British Invasion, harkens back to their not-so-humble-beginnings in the music industry and features the finest players that were actually a part of the British Invasion.

MUM178_AlbumArt

Here’s a rundown of some of the artists featured:

Clem Cattini has appeared on 43 number one hit singles.  Forty-Three – writing it out might give that number real weight!  He was a member of British Invasion darlings The Tornados (Telstar!) and performed on some classic tunes and albums we all know and love: You Really Got Me by The Kinks, Hurdy Gurdy Man by Donovan, Lou Reed by Lou Reed, With A Little Help From My Friends by Joe Cocker, Rock And Roll Highway by Jimmy Page and To Whom It May Concern by The Bee Gees among many others.  Here’s a piece of Rock n’ Roll trivia: Clem Cattini was Jimmy Page’s first choice to play drums in Led Zeppelin, but he was too busy at the time to join the band.

Brett Bennett was a member of The Shadows and has built a solid reputation as an arranger, conductor, producer and composer for TV and film music since the mid-1970s.  Some of his composition credits have been for TV favorites like Dallas, Knotts Landing, Pulaski, The Royal Wedding and Dennis Hopper’s film The American Way.  He has collected many awards for his music including three Ivor Novello awards, a Gold Badge Award from the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters Society and an OBE (Officer of the British Empire) for his services to music which was awarded from The Queen at Buckingham Palace in 2004.

Mo Foster is a well-known session player who has played with a long list of legends like Phil Collins, Jeff Beck, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Cher, Eric Clapton, Sting and Meatloaf among many others.  He started his career with the jazz-fusion group Affinity in the late 60s and has had a long and illustrious career.  Some of his stories and anecdotes have been collected in his books Seventeen Watts? and British Rock Guitar.

Auld Lang Syne With 2014 In Mind

2013 was a banner year for 5 Alarm Music, but as Bachman-Turner Overdrive once sang “you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!”  Before unveiling what’s to come, let’s revel in our glory a bit.  It was an honor and privilege to add musical collaboration on Justin Timberlake’s Only When I Walk Away off his newest album The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2.  I wish we could take credit for his sweet dance moves, but alas…..the musical nod will definitely suffice!

Ron Burgundy likes our Sax.

We’re also big with Lemurs.

Even The Biebs approves!

Now that all of the New Years’ confetti is swept up and the Christmas decorations are put away for another 11 months,  we’re ready to rock the house even harder in 2014!  Here’s a sign of what’s to come:

We are happy to unveil 166 instrumental CDs from Global Graffiti!  This treasure trove of sound features everything from traditional Mariachi to classic Jazz to Hip Hop to hard rock and more.  Check ’em out!

What We Did On Our Summer Vacation: 5 Alarm Music’s New Happenings

This year 5 Alarm Music didn’t to go to Camp Winnetka for our Summer vacation, but decided to put out great music instead.  Priorities!

2013 has been a monumental year for 5 Alarm Music to say the least!  If we were to put out a CD called 5 Alarm Music’s Greatest Hits of 2013, the track listing would go something like this:

1) Collaboration with Justin Timberlake on his track Only When I Walk Away

2) Four songs placed in the series finale of Breaking Bad

3) Music placements in over 100 television shows in 2013

4) National commercials for AT&T, Pepsi, Kraft, Coke, Walmart, Coors, Volkswagen, Victoria’s Secret, Taco Bell and Travelocity

5) Released 11 new CDs on our 5 Alarm Music, 1 Versatile Underscore and Cinemasounds labels

2013 5 Alarm Music CDs

6) Music placement in The Big Wedding starring Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton

7) Music placement in 42 starring Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford

8) Music placement in The Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer

9) Music placement in the movie trailer for World War Z starring Brad Pitt and Mireille Enos

10) Music placement in the move trailer for The Wolverine starring Hugh Jackman and Will Yun Lee

11) Music placement in the move trailer for Dallas Buyers Club starring Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner

What a year…….and it’s not over yet!  Just last month we got placements in 31 TV shows, 6 major motion pictures, 1 movie trailer and 3 national commercials.  We have a feeling there will be more to come before the ball drops in Times Square!  Take a listen:

5 Alarm Music wishes you and yours a very happy (and musical) holiday season!

White Listing: How To Eliminate Ads On Your YouTube Content

Like mosquitoes buzzing around your ears on a humid Summer evening, ads on YouTube can be annoying.  Either they show up before the video starts or they pop up right when your audience is about to get to the good part!  If the ads are really long, some people might give up and move onto someone else’s content.  How can you rid yourself of this advertising nuisance?  If you post a video, own the content and have a music license for the soundtracks, here are the two magic words to your advertising salvation: white listing.  White listing is accomplished by supplying the URL link for your YouTube video to the music company that granted the music license.  If a music license was purchased for the use, companies like 5 Alarm Music can white list your video to prevent pop-up ads from appearing on your work.  Simple, right?

youtube ad

In order to put this concept into perspective, one must rewind time and reflect on how things used to be.  It’s hard to imagine life before all of the gadgetry and technology we use (and take for granted) all day long.  As I type, I wonder what my working life would be like if all I had in front of me was a typewriter.  No delete button?  Are you kidding?!  Desks across the world would be littered with correction tape and general frustration.  No cell phones?  I don’t miss having to dig for dimes (later quarters) once you actually tracked down a pay phone which always happened to be located on the loudest intersections in town.  Good riddance!

payphone_graveyard_02

One of the biggest game-changers in recent history has been the dawn of YouTube.  Way back before 2005, or Before YouTube (B.Y.T.), video sharing meant either being one of the fortunate few whose production got picked up by a huge TV network or gathering around your DVD player/VCR/film strip projector with your friends and family to show off your work.  Want to check out your favorite music video any old time you want to?  Looks like you were out of luck B.Y.T.  Even sitting in front of MTV wouldn’t have done you much good back in ’05 since Reality TV had already taken over.  It was a bleak time indeed!

Youtube_logo41

Fast forward to 2013: You have spent hours of your life watching anything from Gangnam Style to a poor dog getting teased about bacon and other goodies.  With over 1 billion unique users every month, YouTube is a cultural phenomenon that has changed everything.  According to YouTube’s own statistics, six billion hours of video is viewed in any given month – that’s almost an hour for every human being on earth!  70% of YouTube traffic is from outside of the US.  Now the whole world can get in on the same jokes!

removed-800x483

Anytime a new and insanely popular public interface like YouTube comes along, there are bound to be new issues that come along with it.  Most of the sharing on YouTube features content that is owned by someone other than the person who posted it.  Exposure is key for breaking new artists (Justin Bieber anyone?) but the copyright holder ultimately has the right to remove content due to infringement laws.  How many times have you searched for something wicked awesome only to see the dreaded crooked smile icon?  *Fist shake!

youtube ad

The happy medium that most copyright owners have arrived at is what is known as YouTube Monetization.  In simple terms: if an outside party features material that they do not own on a YouTube video, the copyright owner can sell advertising on the video.  That’s why there are usually advertisements at the beginning of a YouTube video or pop-ups that appear during the video toward the play bar.  Companies like AdRev or AdShare give copyright owners the option of monetizing videos from outside parties posted on social media interfaces with Google and YouTube being the two biggies.

This is all well and good, but there are a few instances where this business model can get a little sticky.  The biggest snag has been with advertising agencies uploading their commercials to YouTube.  It is possible for competitors to post rival ads on a commercial, essentially an advertising agency’s biggest nightmare!  How can that be?  Remember all of the fine print you clicked OK on when you set up your YouTube page?  Monetization for copyright owners was probably stated in paragraph #1,231.  Even though the agency technically owns the content and legally licensed music for internet use, they do not own the actual copyright for the piece of music which leaves the door open for monetization.

With a changing marketplace and evolving technology, it seems everyone is writing the rules as we go along.  In business as in life, only one thing is for certain: change is the only constant you can count on!  Happy YouTubing, everyone!

The Story Of Our Lives: New Releases – 5/31/13

How many times have you heard a song and thought, “This song is a page out of my diary.”  It’s as if the songwriter sneaked into your brain while you were sleeping and borrowed a few storylines for lyrical fodder.  Great songs often act as a mirror to our personal stories and have the same properties as an ear marked photograph to bring us back to a time in our lives.  Along with melodies and harmonies, music’s storytelling powers are infinite!  This week’s new releases celebrate the emotive properties of marrying prose to music.

MR154 Rock & Soul

The soul singers from the 60’s and 70’s added an exclamation point to the proclamations of personal freedom and independence from the era.  Plus the music had a way of taking hold of your soul, the genre is aptly named!  MR154 Rock & Soul captures the finest moods of Rock, Soul and R&B from the early pioneers as well as the modern artists carrying the torch today.  Oh, the sweet sounds of soul!

MYR005 Boolfight – Ferral

Ferral, the second Montmorency Records release from the Paris based Indie Rock band Boolfight, picks up where they left off from their last release Multiple Devils with more ear catching hooks and hypnotic moody songs.  This CD takes it a step further by expanding their musical landscape into the ambient ethereal realm.  This is the type of album that is best to listen to on headphones with your eyes closed.  Some of the best journeys are those that happen in our own minds with the perfect soundtrack playing along.

As the old saying goes, “Fact is stranger than fiction.”  Iceman starring Michael Shannon and Winona Ryder is a chilling story based on the notorious contract killer/family man Richard Kuklinski and illustrates how people can hide in plain sight.  Tracks from 5 Alarm Music, Atlantic 7 and Source In Sync music libraries help paint the picture of suspense and drama.

The great American pastime has had some hiccups when it comes to racial equality.  Jackie Robinson made large advances toward equality when he signed on with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1946 becoming the first African American professional baseball player.  42 starring Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford is a biography of his courage and bravery.  Listen for a classic period jazz piece from The Cavendish Music Library!

Mad Men

We are already discovering what kind of trouble the iconic Don Draper can get into all over again in season 6, but somehow it’s always scandalous and unexpected.   Tune in this Sunday for more tantalizing storytelling and enjoy hearing tracks from the Cavendish Music Library and Deneb Records.  And don’t forget to pour yourself an Old Fashioned to mark the occasion!

The Office

Somehow The Office is an eerily accurate depiction of the 9-5 universe at large without being a cliche.  It’s best not to drink beverages while watching this show because they are bound to be sprayed out all over your TV from bursts of uncontrollable laughter after a dry Dwight one-liner or witnessing Steve Carell’s brand of physical comedy.  We got a recent placement from our very own 5 Alarm Music library, we are sad to see this show end its hilarious run on May 16th.  Dunder Mifflin 4eva!

The Following

Kevin Bacon is an FBI agent on the hunt for the elusive serial killer Joe Carroll who has formed an underground cult of fanatical killers.  This show opens the cellar door and draws you in with the same curiosity that killed the cat.  Our most recent placement features achingly beautiful Classical Music from the AVC Music Library.

The Good Wife

Alicia Florrick, played by Julianna Margulies, proves that you can bounce back from a colossal public scandal and regain your mojo if you put your mind to it.  The title of this show is deceptive and features deeply intelligent commentary on politics and law.  Our latest placement from the Source In Sync music library can keep up with the conversation!

PNBT1032 Blaxploitation

The 1970’s was a cool era for bell bottoms, crime dramas, political liberation and all-around funkiness!  PNBT1032 Blaxploitation embraces the funky feelings of the period with no apologies.  These sounds of the city remind us that the jive-talkers and pusher men don’t stand a chance against the unwritten laws of the street.

TA003 Spaghetti Western

Navigate the wild west Italian style!  Our favorite fun pranksters at FlipperMusic have a new library aptly named That’s Amore.  Picture this: New York, New York.  You’re 8 years old at a family gathering filled with people who look like they belong in The Godfather but are laughing, I mean bellowing, and eating all kinds of tasty Italian foods.  Escarole, lasagna, marinated mushrooms, salami, chianti and a nice sfogliatelle or cannoli for desert are the center of the festivities.  Oh no, the dreaded Aunt Regina cheek pinching commences to the tune of, “You’re getting so much older but you’re still my little tesoro, ah?”  Being Italian is kind of awesome, and That’s Amore taps into the culture with their usual charm.  TA003 Spaghetti Western celebrates the playful side of the film genre with lone flutes, epic trumpets, chimes, and panoramic rides into the sunset.  Giddy up!
