A Fresh Dose of Brilliance: New Production Music – 7/30/10

Brilliance wears many different hats.  It can take the form of an innovative invention that makes our lives easier or a diplomatic solution to ensure peace.  Sometimes brilliance can take the form of taking common elements and creating combinations that sound brand new.  The new releases from the JW Brilliant Series offer a fresh twist on dramatic, Blues, World, Rock and Lifestyle music.

The villain blends in with the dark of the night and prowls unnoticed by the oblivion of sleeping urban residents.  The unsuspecting target will soon realize their ominous fate that is closing in.  JWBM014 Dark Cinematic Beds ignites a sense of unease that comes from ill intent and evil circumstances.  The painful and personal aftermath of the inflicted trauma is illustrated poetically by JWBM017 Thoughtful Themes.

You can just feel the humidity eminating from these catchy ditties that originate from the rambling highways of the American South.  JWBM015 Delta Blues is a down home collection of feel good Delta Blues that’s as American as apple pie.  Think sunsets and cicadas chirping around a weathered slide guitarist on a rickety wooden porch that has fallen victim to moisture and many years gone by.

Give The Drummer Some! Top Notch Drummers Power Production Music Library Tracks

What’s the biggest difference between a drummer and a large pizza?  A large pizza can feed a family of 4.  Bah-dump CHING!

We drummers have heard it all and are used to being the brunt of all the bad musician jokes.  We are used to lugging around heavy and awkwardly shaped gear up stairs and being shoved into tight dark corners of the stage.  We are used to idly watching as the lead singers and guitarists soak in all of the adulation and praise while we sit alone at the bar after the show.  As Rodney Dangerfield was fond of saying, the drummer gets “no respect!”

There are those few drummers who instill a sense of wide eyed awe and disbelief during a performance.  The general public may not be able to pick them out of a line-up, but the combination of physicality and coordination is remarkable.  Case in point – Danny Carey from Tool.  After watching their performance at The Nokia Theater last night, I envisioned electrical controls underneath his LA Clipper’s jersey powering mechanical limbs to pull off those chops.  It’s a blessing and a curse to be a trained musician.  You know enough to recognize just how difficult (impossible?) it is to play like that!

There are some smoking tracks in the 5 Alarm catalog that feature the best drummers in the business and make me want to go home and practice paradiddles.  Here are some of my favorites –

Chad Wackerman is the unassuming monster drummer behind Frank Zappa‘s touring band in the 1980’s.  He’s one of the few people on earth who can actually play the daunting and nearly impossible Black Page from Zappa’s intimidating musical vault.  This is the stuff of legend, kids!  Here’s a tribal rocker from the Sonic Ozault Music Library’s Guitar Heroes Vol.3 that highlights Chad’s power:

Gregg Bissonette is best known as a in-demand session drummer and all around nice guy who has toured with the likes of Toto, Maynard Ferguson and Steve Vai.  Here’s a clip from the 5 Alarm Classic Rock CD with fellow Mustard Seeds comrade Doug Bossi on guitar/vocals that demonstrates Gregg’s talent for fueling a song:

Incidentally, Gregg’s brother Matt Bissonette is playing bass on the track as well.  Matt is on our Rescue Records label and flexes his Funky bass chops on this track:

M B Gordy is a well respected and versatile percussionist who has backed some of the top artists in the world: The Doobie Brothers, Neil Diamond, Wilco and Frank Zappa among many others.  Here’s a Brazilian celebration that features his full-circle vision in creating a drummer’s paradise:

Musical Scrap Book: New Production Music – 7/16/10

Like a patchwork quilt, the history of our lives can be pieced together by the songs that were popular at the time of our memories.  Your old room in your parents’ house, the awkwardness of high school, your first kiss, the first day away at college, your first date with the person you ended up marrying….new and amazing experiences will continue until the day we cease to exist.  The two new CD’s from the Blazed Out Music library have the Pop appeal that can record the magic of right now.

BOM013 Urban & Electro Pop drags you out onto the dance floor and seduces you with dizzying beats, sexy vocals and hip hop styled rappers.  Inhibition is a dull bedfellow and being on our best behavior never sparks any good material for our memory reels.  Right?

BOM014 Hot Pop: Rock & Downtempo is an uplifting slice of freedom.  With catchy vocals and rock guitar hooks, these tracks are the kind that have a long lease in your car stereo and fuel the good times.  It’s Summer and the music should match the heat of the night!

Cheers to good times and even better music!  The memory reels are spinning…..

Homage To The Hollywood Bowl

I love The Hollywood Bowl!  My first pilgrimage this year happened last Monday to see Kings Of Leon with some my fellow 5 Alarm comrades.  Whether you are watching a breathtaking performance by the LA Philharmonic Orchestra or an electrifying rock n’ roll experience like a Kings Of Leon show (Caleb Followill: Beard or no beard?  Discuss.), you can’t help but feel the music and surroundings revitalize your entire being.

With its wide and glorious band shell, bench seating nestled inside a natural outdoor amphitheater and picnic areas that allow for outside food and beverages, The Hollywood Bowl is a unique and historical treasure.

Here are some fun facts about The Hollywood Bowl:

The first performance was by the Los Angeles Philharmonic on July 11, 1922

It’s one of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world and the largest in the United States with a capacity of 17,376

The “Muse Fountain” located by the entrance was designed by sculptor George Stanley who also designed the Oscar statuette

Musical Traditions: Top 10 Father And Son Legacies

With Father’s Day fresh in our recent memory banks, it’s only fitting to pay homage to a Rescue Records Father and Son team.  Forrest Lee Sr. started his prolific career in the early 1950’s with the late great Buck Owens and Eddie Cochran offering their guitar services to Forrest’s early recordings.  His son Forrest Lee Jr. carries the Country Music torch proudly and continues to have his music placed in shows like The Office, Friday Night Lights, Weeds, One Life To Live among others.

A familial music tradition rarely ends at the grave.  As the saying goes, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!”  Here’s my top 10 Father and Son musician duos:

#10 – Waylon and Shooter Jennings

Waylon Jennings established his reputation as an outlaw early in his career and narrowly escaped death from giving up his seat on the ill-fated flight with Buddy Holly “The Day The Music Died” in 1959.  Shooter Jennings carries the Country Outlaw lasso passed from his Dad.

Music For The Ages: New Production Music – 7/2/10

There are three major life stages before entering adulthood: childhood, adolescence and the “maybe my stereo IS a little too loud” stage.  Some of us skip the quiet stereo stage before adulthood however, just ask my neighbors!  The three new releases from the Online Production Music Library represent the first few landmarks of human development.

OPM_F014 Playhouse is a carefree blend of jovial and light hearted tracks that conjure up the images of our innocent youth.  Show and Tell, recess at the playground, cookies and milk…..ah, it was a simple time!

Rev your engines, here comes a bold rocker!  OPM_F013 Punk Rock Hero is a high octane in-your-face collection of whoop ass.  It’s as unruly as an angry teenager with plenty of rebellious anthems that bust onto the scene like a wild bucking bronco!

OPM_F012 Lifestyle & Living is like the soothing breath of fresh air from the calm after the storm.  Dreamy and melodic, these tracks are light and breezy with the comfort that maturity brings.  Experience offers fresh perspectives!

In closing, I tend to agree with Mark Twain: “Age is an issue of mind over matter.  If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”  I’ll crank the stereo to that!

Vivid Technicolor Melody: New Production Music – 6/25/10

Music is like paint on a canvas.  Colors swirl within evolving melodies like rain drops collecting in a puddle.  The two new releases from the Justement Music Library conjure up strong emotional imagery that paint a vivid picture.

JUST067 Play With My Piano is an inviting mix of piano tones that resemble echos of faded memories recalled in an open peaceful setting.  With a touch of elegance and unbalanced curiosity, these tracks are like viewing someone’s past documented on Super 8 mm film playing on a grainy projector.  Personal and haunting.

The suave and hardened criminal scans the lobby for witnesses as he slips into the door that clearly states Employees Only to stash the detonator.  T minus 3 minutes and 28 seconds – just enough time to slip out the emergency exit and into the fast BMW strategically left for his getaway.  Yes, JUST068 Velvet Trigger Club is a Big Bad Mo-Fo.  Lots of tremolo hollow bodied guitars, hammond organs, big city detective horns and good ol’ fashioned swagger from the 70’s to help the plot thicken.
