Maximum Minimalism: New Production Music – 11/11/11

One of my favorite movies of all time is American Beauty. Kevin Spacey’s character, Lester Burnham, is the ultimate everyman who finally takes control of his miserable life. Favorite line: Carolyn Burnham: Uh, whose car is that out front?
Lester Burnham: Mine. 1970 Pontiac Firebird. The car I’ve always wanted and now I have it. I rule!

The first time I saw it, I remember being struck by the effectiveness of Thomas Newman‘s film score. The score’s quirky repeating interwoven melodies were in sharp contrast to the lush flowing orchestral scores that tend to dominate most feature films, especially Best Picture Oscar winners. The score took to you a place of an omniscient presence witnessing dysfunctional family peculiarities magnified under the microscope. Big lush orchestrations would be too blunt a tool for those odd yet all-to-common observations throughout the film. The American Beauty film score is a great example of Minimalism which has come into prominence thanks in part to composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass

Football fans are a rare breed. They wear more face paint than Gene Simmons, eat super fire hot wings until tears roll down their inflamed cheeks and some even swig enough beer that their guts resemble a 3rd trimester swelling belly by the Super Bowl. This comes as no surprise, football is not a game for the faint-of-heart. If you take the strategic element out of the equation, sheer brute force is necessary to achieve victory. When watching football, I often find myself thinking, “Ooooohhhhh, that’s gotta hurt!” Especially when you see the bone crushing replay in slow motion. That’s some serious ouch, the couch is a much better alternative thank you very much!

“Did You Hear That? I Think Someone Is Outside!”: New Horror Production Music – 10/14/11

The predictability of horror movies is a big reason why they are so awesome. The line “Did you hear that? I think someone is outside!” cues the cute but incredibly dumb high school stud to get out of the make-out mobile only to meet his grisly death from the deranged maniac/monster/mutant/alligator/insects/flesh eating zombies ect. Horror is my favorite cinematic genre because they fall into two distinct categories – 1) Horror-fying or 2) Horror-ble. Horror-fying are the movies like The Exorcist or The Shining that actually have an intriguing plot and scare the bejesus out of you! Horror-ble movies, like Troll 2 or Plan 9 From Outer Space, are so amazingly bad that you can’t help but gather your closest fun-loving friends for laughter filled viewing parties. Trust me, you will have inside jokes for a lifetime!

This week’s new releases from the 9 Lives, Cavendish Trailers, JW Brilliant Series, Octopus Records and Intermede music libraries feature some of the spookiest Horror production music around! ‘Tis the season for scary Halloween tracks to curdle your blood, but these cues come with a warning – Whatever you do, just pretend that screeching sound outside your bedroom window is the cat and go back to bed for crying out loud! C’mon people, think!

If there was an award ceremony for new releases here at 5 Alarm, OTP607 Fear In The Town Of The Living Dead would get my vote for “Most Awesome Album Cover” of 2011. I mean just look at it, it rules! All outside aesthetics aside, this 1970’s soundtrack to an actual B-rated horror movie captures the best cheesy horror music of the era. The dumb stud in this movie is definitely wearing bell bottoms and sporting a sweet mustache.

Falling Into Fall: New Production Music – 10/7/11

I haven’t met Forrest Lee Jr., but he strikes me as the type of guy that would be fun to accompany to the local watering hole for a beer or three! He honed his skills as a Country artist at a very early age thanks in part to the influence of his father/fellow Rescue Records artist Forrest Lee Sr. who was a band leader for Buck Owens and Eddie Cochran among others. His brand of Nashville Country captures the lively spirit of the American South and is bound to resonate with the American Everyman!

The musical term “Indie” has gone through a transformation over the years. What was once short for Independent, unsigned or signed to a label not under the umbrella of a major label, is now more of a genre regardless of label status. You no longer need the Matador or Sub Pop badge of cool to be officially Indie like you did in the 1980’s – 1990’s. Now you just need skinny jeans, a molester mustache, geeky glasses and a PBR in your hand. Zing!

All kidding aside, the Indie Rock scene has contributed some of the most inventive and compelling music within the last few decades. Freedom from Major Label restrictions paved the way for a more open artistic expression and room for experimentation. One of the newest additions to the 5 Alarm family comes to us from the Justement Music Library – Montmorency Records. Each release features a different Indie Rock band with a unique sound and flair. Be the first on the block to discover a cool new band!

Great songs and nothing but great songs, nothing else matters! Boolfight seems to have caught onto that notion early on. These emotive and edgy indie rock songs turn up the energy with dynamic grace. They seem like the kind of band that has the ability turn up to 11 on every song but the musical smarts to save it for when you least expect it. Boolfight’s sophomore release Multiple Devils lives up to its bad-boy title with an underlying deviance combined with a depth and complex texture that can only come from an honest place. That inner struggle comes through on each song and celebrates the beauty of human contradiction.

Nothing Warms Your Heart Like MUM: New Production Music – 8/31/11

Trained musicians can make for bad audience members. We are the ones with folded arms in the back of the club ingesting every note into our internal musical database and can be all too quick to not be impressed. Yes, I am sad to admit it. This internal monitor, or “the critic in you” as a musician friend once put it, can also work in the opposite way. Sometimes you hear music so striking and harmonious, it sinks into a happy place and serves as a reminder as to why you decided to play music in the first place!

The Made Up Music library, MUM for short and a new addition to the 5 Alarm catalog, has a wide reaching appeal which is bound to impress the folks in the front rows and especially those in the back of the club with folded arms! The composition and performance team consisting of Ray Russell, Ralph Salmons and Rik Walton have resumes that read like the roster at The Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame. Hmmmmm…..let me see. Have you ever heard of some of these people? David Bowie, Art Garfunkle, Tina Turner, Phil Collins, Robert Plant, Van Morrison, Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Madonna, Sheryl Crow, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Jeff Beck, Elvis Costello, Alice Cooper, Alanis Morisette, Jeff Beck, Quincy Jones, Bjork, Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Queen, Burt Bacharach…..Me either. I kid, I kid! The caliber of musicality showcased in MUM is humbling to say the least!

OK, enough with the name dropping. The music definitely speaks for itself!
