A Splash Of Local Color: New World Music – 3/16/12

When I moved to Los Angeles in 2004, I must admit I was typical of most LA transplants. I wanted to see the Hollywood sign and admire the stars that line the sidewalk of Hollywood Boulevard. These are the shrines of the entertainment industry after all! It doesn’t take long for you realize that seeing the Hollywood sign means having your friend take a picture a mile away from the actual sign while blocking traffic up Beachwood Canyon much to the dismay of those who actually live on the street. And seeing the stars on Hollywood Boulevard means walking the grimy street full of tacky gift shops full of cheap merchandise while getting your picture taken with a midget dressed like Mr.T for $5 (he gets mad if you don’t pay up front, just a heads up). The moral of the story? The locals know where to really go. Like the Magic Castle or the Hollywood Bowl for all of you about to visit LA!

This week’s new releases from the Cavendish Music, Pennybank Tunes and Amygdala Music libraries are refreshing splashes of local color as seen by the natives. Nothing Hollywood Boulevard about it!

The 84th annual Academy Awards stormed through LA last Sunday like a Gucci-clad swashbuckler riding a white stallion! 5 Alarm Music may not have been swarmed with flash bulbs on the red carpet, but our music made its appearance in films nominated and awarded Hollywood’s highest honor. Move over, Meryl Streep!

The highly anticipated American version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara definitely lived up to expectations! With five nominations including Best Actress, Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound Mixing and Sound Editing, it makes this film a definite must-see.

The Many Faces Of Indie: New Indie Production Music – 1/6/12

It’s 2012 and we still don’t ride in spaceships or live in dome huts above the clouds……*le sigh.* Skype is about as close to fulfilling the futuristic lifestyle portrayed in The Jetsons, although jet propulsion would really come in handy during LA rush hour traffic! One thing we CAN look forward to in the new year is great new music!

My 2012 started off with a quest for discovering new music through the internet. One thing I can tell you – Indie is still going strong. The funny thing about the term “Indie” is that it appears to be a blanket term for popular music….kind of what the term “Alternative Music” morphed into during the mid to late 1990’s. All it took was for Spin Doctors to be grouped in the Alternative category to kill that term dead. As long as Nickelback stays far away from Indie, we’re all good!

This week’s new releases from the Justement, Focus Songs, JW and Made Up Music libraries illustrate the many faces of Indie Rock. Think of it as a grab bag of the tastiest sounds of 2012! Happy new year!

The Holidays Hollywood Style: Imagem Music/5 Alarm Music Know How To Party!

The large musical family at Imagem Music know how to do many things well. Our biggest specialty is obvious – music. The second is throwing parties! Yes, it’s true. Our first annual West Coast holiday party at Hollywood hot spot Bardot was a star-studded smashing success and begs the question, “Do we really have to wait another year for this to happen again?”
