The camp fire was almost as fierce as the fire in the old man’s eyes as he spoke of the New Frontier. He spoke slowly, diliberately – “In the end, a man only has 3 things that are really his own – His name, his horse and his 6 shooter. When I stared down Dean Burnsides on that fateful day, I knew his name on a headstone would be all that remained of him if I wanted to stay alive.”
His captive audience were young men not well versed in the unwritten laws of the Wild West. They were ambitious men from good families that knew more about meditation and zen than getting their hands dirty from an honest day’s work.
“You boys can’t imagine the secrets these mountains could tell ya.” He spit a wad of chaw aside for added emphasis – “Heck, ya’ll will probably live through the 1980’s in your warm homes listening to that New Wave of music that them kids listen to!”
Over in the distance, a coyote howled at the moon as it shone brightly across the land ruled by daring outlaws.
