Doug Bossi: Multiple Award Winner At 2011 BMI Awards

Hats off to our 5 Alarm compadre Doug Bossi for winning not one, but two BMI Awards!

His compositions featured in ABC’s philanthropic show Secret Millionaire and The Discovery Channel’s aviator family documentary series Flying Wild Alaska received BMI’s highest honor last week.  Doug was one of only 14 other artists that got more than one BMI TV and Film Awards this year.

Doug has contributed lots of music to the 5 Alarm Music Library as well as being the main creative force behind the 1 Versatile Underscore music library.  His musical diversity spans many genres and moods.  Anything from hard hitting guitar riffs with vocals (05A065 Classic Rock) to atmospheric guitar reflections (05A089 Ambient Guitar Scores) to edge-of-your seat filmic rock (05A086 Superhero Rock) to feel good lifestyle grooves (1VU001 Neutral) to pensive reflective moods (1VU005 Emotive), Doug proves that he can do it all!

Congratulations Doug, 5 Alarm Music is your number one fan!

Wanderlust Season: New Prodcution Music – 5/20/11

The month of May is a tipping point of sorts.  The weather dictates the donning of skirts and shorts, students start focusing on leisure instead of studying, the backyard BBQ defeats your oven as a main cooking device and weekends are designated times for packing up the car for fun road trips.  The grass is green and the wildflowers are in bloom, yes siree Bob it’s a beautiful time of year to get out of the house and enjoy it!  This week’s new releases from the JW Brilliant Series, Abaco and 1 Revolution Music libraries celebrate the rebirth of nature and the end of Winter hibernation.

If 1RM021 Modern Heartland & Roots 1 were a person, he would be wearing a plaid Western shirt, Wranglers, cowboy boots, and a warm smile while driving past in his trusty old pick up truck.  The Heartland of America is about 1,500 miles and a 180 degree attitude change from Los Angeles.  Remember when people used to wave as they drove past?  Long live the good old fashioned hospitality of the American Heartland!

Nothing says “down home” like a finger picked acoustic guitar.  Upon first listen, any lingering stress slowly fades from your psyche and is replaced by a sense of peace and well being.  AB195 Simple Moods Guitar is an open and dreamy relaxed state of mind that’s as contagious as the flu in a cramped private jet.  Sit back and breathe it all in!

Have you ever driven across the United States?  One thing you will notice is the unending stretches of highway with nothing to look at but tumbleweed and wide open space.  Not to mention a lot of weird truck stops.  The folks who wrote the tracks in JWBM029 Wide Open Spaces – Americana are no strangers to long treks across the I-40.  Think of this CD as your hitchhiking companion in a big rig trucking across many many miles of desolation.

The Fantastic Fifties: New Production Music – 5/13/11

Now that gasoline is over $4 a gallon, it’s nice to think back to what America was like in the 1950′s.  The end of World War II brought many of our servicemen and women home to start families, television killed the radio star, space exploration was becoming an exciting possibility and Rock n’ Roll was in its infancy.  Yes, it was an optimistic and hopeful time!  So close your eyes, picture yourself in a diner sipping an ice cream soda with Buddy Holly playing on the jukebox and boogie down!

The electric guitar was a mere toddler during the 1950′s.  The sweet sound of a Gibson hollow body running through a tube amplifier wrapped in tweed can’t be beat!  JWBM021 Fifties Americana is a light hearted glimpse of the free and easy days of the fifties back in the good ol’ U S of A.

Back in the day, Elvis was The King of scandal for shaking those sultry hips on stage.  Oh, the horror!  Here are some upbeat good time rock n’ roll ditties to shake along to.  The tracks on DNB709 Burlesque Boogie belong flowing out of the speakers of a 58′ Studebaker.

Early Rock n’ Roll owes a lot to the blues men who came before them.  The irresistible allure of a Boogie Woogie piano harmony and the bouncy shuffle groove is the cornerstone of most 1950′s rock songs.  BBX138 Big On Blues reads like a love letter to a true American genre of music.

Maddie Madsen: The Queen Of Custom

Life isn’t perfect.  Except when you call 5 Alarm Music for a piece of custom music that is!  Staying true to the 5 Alarm motto “We’ve got it or we’ll get it,” no is a word you will never hear around these parts!  Sometimes “getting it” actually involves writing and recording a piece of music soup to nuts customized to your specifications.  Regardless of how outlandish the musical request may seem, our Head of Production Maddie Madsen will get ‘er done!

Maddie Madsen radiates music.  She ventured out of her home state of Utah after high school to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.  She honed her skills as a Music Synthesis major with a focus on composition and all-around shredding on the keyboard.  Her first job after graduation took her across the country to the burgeoning music scene in San Francisco at an audio post production studio while playing keys in the Progressive Metal band Quiddity.  Maddie’s move to Los Angeles marked her start in the Production Music world as a Music Director and Account Executive before being a founder of 5 Alarm Music.  An extensive background like Maddie’s can seem intimidating, but her friendly and open demeanor is a breath of fresh air in the competitive music industry.

Check out Maddie’s impressive Prog Metal keyboard chops back in the early 90′s with Quiddity!  When’s the reunion tour?

Each recording session creates its own set of challenges.  One custom recording job in particular required unique specifications: write a children’s song that will be played as a mode of torture to inmates at Guantanamo Bay for a scene in The Men Who Stare At Goats starring George Clooney (*swoon*) and Jeff Bridges.  In other words, write a really obnoxious song that would drive someone nuts if looped on permanent repeat.  No problem!  Maddie gathered up a group of eager youngsters into the studio and all was going well……until one of the kids burst into tears during the session.  The bribe of cupcakes after the session wasn’t enough to turn that frown upside down.  It wasn’t until the assistant engineer built a “magical fort” out of acoustic baffles that the child pulled it together and delivered a stellar performance.  Magical forts always make everything better in the studio!

Assembling a large choir for a custom recording session is nothing new around here.  Having a homeless man burst into the live room during a live take was!  The mishap occurred while recording a version of Dvorak’s New World Symphony for everyone’s favorite show about Mormon polygamy, Big Love.  It’s understandable, Rock n’ Roll clients at recording studios can have that homeless look.  Zing!

Incidentally, the same choir came back into the studio to sing an arrangement of Joy To The World which will be featured in the opening credits in A Very Harold And Kumar Christmas which will grace the big screen Christmas 2011.

5 Alarm’s custom music credits go beyond major motion pictures and television.   Maddie has also produced music used in corporate advertising, network branding, website marketing, commercials and even the holiday music heard outside of the Time Warner Center’s Holiday Under The Stars light show in New York.

Check out a Rock en Espanol track featured in Herbalife’s feel good web campaign.  This track was co-written by Beastie Boys drummer and all-around awesome dude, Fredo Ortiz:

You Can’t Beat The Classics: New Production Music – 4/29/11

Great music stands the test of time.  If you hummed Beethoven’s 5th Symphony (Duh-Duh-Duh-DUUUUUUH), pretty much anyone alive will be able to hum along with you.  That melody is over 200 years old!  Something tells me that in the year 2211, the Single Ladies melody will not have the same staying power (sorry Beyonce, but you still got it going on sister!).  Mothers and teachers alike have told young aspiring musicians “You just can’t beat the Classics!” as we blasted Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins in youthful rebellion.  Now that I am at the age where I think Brussels sprouts delicious, Beethoven’s 5th Symphony and Nevermind peacefully cohabitate in my CD collection.

Some compositions really push your emotional buttons.  FCLS008 Classical Drama is a collection of musical intensity that grabs you by the ears and takes you into another world.  These classics tell a story that mere words cannot describe!

Now picture what it would sound like if Mozart and Beethoven got traveled through time into the Electronica era.  FCLS007 Classical Remixes takes the beauty and grandeur of a full symphony with the propulsion of modern beats.  Imagine a full symphony head banging while rocking out Ride of the Valkyries.  This CD busts out the Classical jams!
